When it comes to extreme sports Red Bull seems to be always the sponsor behind the most spectacular competitions.
The soft drinks brand will organise the event where Australian rider Robbie Maddison hopes to break the distance jump record with a 400ft-plus leap on New Year's Eve - the Red Bull: New Year. No Limits.
The 32-year-old Aussie is not new to this dangerous style of motorcycling, having set a previous distance jump record - 322ft over a football field in 2007. He has also jumped 96ft up onto the top of the Arc de Triomphe replica at Paris Las Vegas and backflipped across the open drawbridge of London's Tower Bridge.
"Jumping long distances is a passion of mine, and I'm excited to come back for New Year's Eve and sail over San Diego Harbor," said Maddison. "400 feet is my goal. It's not all about getting the world record to me, it's more about understanding this feat and the commitment ahead to achieving what most would consider an impossible jump."
Maddison will be sharing his stunt with another athlete, Levi LaVallee, a 28-year-old native of Longville, Minnesota, who will be attempting the same distance with a different machine: a snowmobile.
Both will try to perform a jump over a 300ft water gap on San Diego Bay. The event will take place on Saturday December 31st at approximately 11pm local time.
Maddison's impressive career in freestyle motocross includes a X Games silver medal in 2010 in Moto X Best Trick and two wins on the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour in Calgary 2009 and Madrid 2010.
The Australian pilot aims to eclipse the existing record of 391 feet held by Ryan Capes.
