Dainese is ready to present its new street version of the D-air air-bag suite at the EICMA motorcycles show in Milan, Italy, the next November.
The D-air street version comes after one year from the presentation of the racing version of this James Bond-style wearable air-bag. It will work a bit differently from the previous racing version, because of an electronic unit that is attached to the motorbike.
The suit is shaped similarly to a safety-jacket, with the usual turtle-shell-shape back protector inserted underneath the inflatable portion of the suite.
The unit mounted into the bike is the brain of the air-bag. It will communicate wirelessly with the suit in case of impact, giving start to the 12l air-bag. If the passenger is wearing a suit as well, the unit will start both suits at the same time.
Dainese stated that the D-air can deploy in under 45 milliseconds and it is built to protect rib cage and vital organs, the spine and to limit extreme neck's motions.
The firm added that: "Tests carried out in accordance with draft European standard en 1621.3 for chest protectors show that D-air street cuts the force transferred by over 92% compared with the specified limit."
The electronic brain is connected to accelerometer sensors on the fork and frame to sense any impending impacts.
This system is completely new, if compared with the racing version, since in that case the air-bag is mounted directly on the pilot suite without any connection with the motorbike.
The D-air system has been defined as the most important development in road-safety after the helmet, and the Italian Police is already providing its motorbike sections with it.
From the next November, to ride a motorbike will be safer than ever before and we will be finally a bit closer to the James Bond style.
